Planning your trip to Greece
Between the islands, the mainland, and Greece’s own relationship with time, a Greek itinerary raises a distinct set of questions. Here are the ones we hear most.
Getting Around
5 QUESTIONS
For nearby islands within the same group, the ferry is scenic and part of the experience. For longer jumps, or if time is tight, a short domestic flight is usually the smarter choice, and we’ll route your itinerary accordingly.
At least an hour. Piraeus is Europe’s largest port and spread across nine gates, so we build in enough time between connections that a delay never threatens the rest of your day.
For June through September or around public holidays, yes. Outside peak season there’s more flexibility, but we book ahead regardless to guarantee your preferred sailing and cabin.
Not directly from the United States, those flights all route through Athens or another European hub first. But if you’re pairing your Greece trip with a European capital, Madrid, London, or Paris, for example, many of the islands, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Crete among them, accept nonstop seasonal flights from those cities, which can save you an entire ferry connection.
Always. We arrange private transfers throughout Greece so you’re never navigating an unfamiliar port or bus schedule on arrival.
Visas & Practical Details
5 QUESTIONS
Yes, Greece charges a Climate Crisis Resilience Fee per room per night, collected directly at your accommodation rather than included in the room rate. It’s higher in peak season (April through October) and at higher-category hotels, and cruise passengers pay a separate small port levy. We’ll note the approximate amount for your specific properties and dates.
No. Greece is part of the Schengen Agreement, and US travelers can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
The euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and resorts, though it’s worth carrying some cash for smaller tavernas and island shops.
Timetables exist, but departures can shift by a few minutes in either direction, especially on the islands. We build a comfortable buffer into every transfer so this never affects your plans.
It happens more than you’d expect, and it’s genuine hospitality, not an obligation. A small gift, a bottle of wine or a bakery treat, is a nice gesture if you accept.
Best Time to Visit
3 QUESTIONS
May through October gives you swimmable seas and reliable weather. Late May, June, and September avoid the heaviest July and August crowds while keeping the same warm days.
July and August bring the best weather but also the highest prices and busiest islands. If you want a quieter version of the same islands, we typically steer clients toward the shoulder months instead.
Yes, this is one of our most requested itinerary shapes, a few days of history and food in Athens followed by island time. We’ll sequence it so the transitions feel seamless.
