South Africa Travel FAQs

Cape Town, the Winelands, and combining city with safari.

Planning your trip to South Africa

South Africa combines a world-class city, wine country, and safari in one trip, which brings its own set of questions. Here’s what we hear most.

Safety & Practical Details

5 QUESTIONS

Are there any specific passport requirements for South Africa beyond the standard six months’ validity from your return date?

Yes, South Africa requires two completely blank passport pages in addition to the six months’ validity beyond your return date, a requirement that catches some travelers off guard since it’s stricter than many countries. We’ll confirm this as part of your pre-trip document check.

Is South Africa safe for travelers?

With sensible precautions, yes, and this is exactly where a private guide and trusted drivers make the difference. We route you through well-established, well-lit areas and avoid the specific routes and situations that carry higher risk.

Do US citizens need a visa?

No, US citizens can enter South Africa visa-free for tourism stays of up to 90 days.

What currency is used, and are cards widely accepted?

The South African Rand. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Cape Town and other cities, with ATMs easy to find.

Are any vaccinations required?

No vaccinations are required to enter from the US, though your doctor may recommend Hepatitis A or Typhoid depending on your itinerary, and malaria precautions if your trip includes certain safari regions.

Cape Town & the Winelands

4 QUESTIONS

How much time should we allow for Cape Town and the surrounding area?

A minimum of three to four nights for the city itself, with an additional day or two for the Winelands and the Garden Route if your itinerary includes them.

Is Stellenbosch or Franschhoek the better base for wine touring?

Both offer world-class tastings; the right choice depends on whether you want Stellenbosch’s larger, more varied wine scene or Franschhoek’s smaller, food-focused village feel. We’ll help you decide based on your style.

Can our whole family enjoy the Winelands, or is it mainly for wine lovers?

There’s plenty beyond the tastings, scenic drives, gourmet dining, and beautiful grounds that make for a relaxed day even for non-drinkers or younger travelers.

What’s the best time of year for Cape Town?

November through March, the Southern Hemisphere summer, offers the warmest, driest weather, though spring and autumn are pleasant as well with fewer crowds.

Combining Cape Town with Safari

3 QUESTIONS

Can we combine Cape Town with a safari in one trip?

Yes, this is one of our most popular South Africa itineraries, several days in Cape Town and the Winelands followed by a flight to a safari region such as Kruger or a private reserve.

How do we get between Cape Town and the safari regions?

Usually a short domestic flight, which we arrange along with private transfers on both ends so the transition feels seamless.

Is malaria a concern for the safari portion specifically, even if Cape Town isn’t a risk area?

Cape Town itself carries no malaria risk, but some safari regions, including parts of Kruger, do carry a low risk. We’ll flag this clearly based on your specific camps so you can discuss precautions with your doctor.
