Why we recommend travel insurance
It’s an easy thing to skip when you’re excited about a trip, but it’s one of the most important pieces of planning. Here’s what we tell clients.
Why We Recommend It
4 QUESTIONS
Yes. Even the most carefully designed itinerary can be affected by a flight delay, a medical issue, or a last-minute change of plans, and insurance protects the investment you’ve made in the trip.
We don’t require it, but we recommend it for every trip, and especially for bespoke and multi-generational itineraries where more is at stake if plans change.
Generally, yes, given the higher cost of medical care abroad, evacuation logistics, and the complexity of rebooking multi-country itineraries.
A medical issue or family emergency that forces a cancellation or early return, situations where the cost of the policy is small compared to what’s recovered.
Choosing a Policy
5 QUESTIONS
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an upgrade that lets you cancel for a reason a standard policy wouldn’t cover, typically reimbursing a portion of your trip cost, but it must be purchased within a short window of your first trip payment and cancelled a set number of days before departure. New York has specific rules that restrict standard CFAR coverage for residents, though alternative “fortuitous reason” style coverage is often available instead. We’ll point you toward providers who structure this correctly for New York travelers.
Trip cancellation and interruption coverage, medical coverage and evacuation, and coverage for any pre-existing conditions if relevant to your group.
We can point you toward providers suited to your itinerary and circumstances once your trip is confirmed, rather than a single blanket recommendation for every traveler.
Often, yes, particularly around medical coverage and evacuation, given the greater likelihood of a health-related change of plan.
As soon as possible after your deposit, since some cancellation-related benefits are time-sensitive and tied to how soon after booking you purchase coverage.
Claims & Coverage
3 QUESTIONS
Your travel designer can help you understand next steps, but the claim itself is handled directly through your insurance provider.
Many policies do, particularly for named storm or hurricane-related disruptions, though coverage varies by provider and policy, so it’s worth checking the specifics.
Depending on the policy, yes, often each traveler on a group trip needs their own individual coverage rather than one policy covering the whole group.
