I just returned from an unbelievable trip to Egypt, and I’m still processing everything my partner and I experienced. When most people think of Egypt, they picture the Pyramids and maybe the Sphinx, but even for someone obsessed with The Mummy like myself, this journey revealed so much more about what Egypt has to offer.

This familiarization trip took us through Cairo’s bustling streets, down the Nile River on a luxurious cruise, and finally to the beach paradise of Sharm El-Sheikh on the Red Sea. We explored ancient tombs, sailed on traditional feluccas, rode quads through the desert, and ate our weight in incredible food. Cairo: Where Ancient Meets Modern

We kicked off our adventure in Cairo, and the energy hit us immediately. This city is alive: honking cars weaving through traffic, the call to prayer echoing from mosques, and street vendors everywhere – it’s easy to see that this is one of the most populous cities in the world!

Our first full day took us to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid, and honestly? This became my surprising favorite of the entire trip. There’s something about trekking across the open sand and exploring ancient tombs with just your crew that makes you feel like Indiana Jones discovering these artifacts for the first time. We maneuvered through narrow passages and descended into underground chambers, all the while our incredible Egyptologist guide brought the stories to life: transforming the walls covered in symbols into vivid tales of high priests and ancient rituals.

After Saqqara, we explored Islamic Cairo and got wonderfully lost in Khan El Khalili Bazaar – this massive, maze-like market that’s been around since the 14th century! The spices, handmade crafts, and haggling made it such a fun experience. (Although I must admit, I’m terrible at haggling.)

The next day brought us face-to-face with the main event: the Pyramids of Giza. I know everyone’s seen pictures, but standing there in person is completely different. The sheer size and precision are humbling.

Must-Sees & Dos:

• Visit Saqqara: Let your guide take you to lesser-known tombs on site; while everyone else tours the pyramid, you’ll have a nearly private experience that allows you to really fall back in time.
• Get Lost in Khan El Khalili Bazaar: Let your five senses run wild with new sights, smells, and sounds around every turn – and don’t forget to try Aseer Asab, a sweet drink made from crushed sugarcane stalks.
• Grand Egyptian Museum: Budget extra time – there’s so much more there than you can imagine!
• Take the Camel Ride: Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it’s awkward to stay on. Yes, it’s worth it – you’ll appreciate the photos later.

The Nile Cruise: Floating Through History

After Cairo, we flew to Aswan and began our four-day Nile cruise. We quickly fell into an easy, albeit interesting, rhythm: mornings spent ducking into ancient temples and tombs, afternoons lounging by the top-deck pool, evenings watching traditional Nubian performances after a delicious multi-course dinner.

As a lifelong Egypt-nerd, I was enthralled at the Valley of the Kings when I climbed down into King Tut’s tomb and found the “Boy King” himself right there in front of me – a meeting I never expected to have. And I can’t leave out our visit to Hatshepsut’s temple (an incredible leader and one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs!) that was stunningly carved right into the rocky cliffs.

But a highlight I didn’t expect? Our felucca ride at sunset. Picture this: gliding across the Nile in a traditional sailboat. The peaceful wind filling the sails, the golden light of sunset shimmering across the water, and gentle mist of the Nile sprinkling your face as you sip traditional tea and local wine. Legends say the Nile is magic, and in moments like this you feel that it must be true.

Sharm El-Sheikh: Desert Adventures & Beach Bliss

After several days of immersive history, we flew to Sharm El-Sheikh on the Red Sea coast – what a scenery-change! Crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and the kind of luxury that makes you want to do absolutely nothing. We spent time lounging by the pool, snorkeling in the Red Sea (the coral reefs and tropical fish are unreal), and eating amazing fresh seafood.

But we couldn’t resist one more adventure.

We booked an evening excursion that turned out to be one we’ll never forget. We rode quads through the Sinai Desert – an adrenaline rush colored by golden sand dunes from the fading daylight. We ended up at a traditional Bedouin village for a dinner under the stars: grilled meats, fresh bread, aromatic rice, and sweet tea. After dinner, our hosts taught us about constellations and desert navigation while we inspected far-off planets through perfectly-placed telescopes.

Looking back on our time in Egypt, what stays with me most isn’t just the iconic sites (though they’re absolutely worth the hype). It’s the moments in between:

When people think of Greece, the mind usually jumps straight to Santorini’s whitewashed cliffs or the cosmopolitan energy of Mykonos. While these islands are iconic—and absolutely deserving of every traveler’s bucket list—this work trip allowed me to uncover an entirely different side of Greece. This journey featured the country’s largest island, Crete, and I have to say… it may now be my favorite destination to date.

This familiarization trip gave me a glimpse of a lesser-known, deeply authentic Greece. Athens: Architecture, Rooftops & Slow Weekend Mornings

As we touched down in Athens, we learned that nearly half of Greece’s population calls this vibrant city home. Athens is buzzing—full of chic rooftop restaurants, rich history on every corner, and unbeatable sunset views of the Acropolis. It made for the perfect arrival city, complete with a rooftop dinner to kick off the adventure.

During the weekend mornings, streets fill with locals savoring slow moments over cappuccino freddos and quiet conversations. Natalia, our guide shared these cultural details as we made our way through the lively streets toward the Acropolis on our first full day. If you’re someone like me—who loves to shop, explore, and find the best local spots—your guide will happily point you toward the city’s hidden gems.

Climbing the steps to the Acropolis, you’re instantly hit with awe. The sheer scale, the marble, the craftsmanship—it’s impossible not to wonder how on earth they built this masterpiece. Fortunately, our guide answered every question and even brought models to help explain the construction. We left feeling both humbled and inspired.

And of course, we ended the day with shopping. Spoiler Alert: both my friend and I had to buy an extra carry-on so we wouldn’t be overweight for our flight home. Oops.

Heraklion: Myths & Legends

After a short weekend in Athens, we flew to Crete and arrived in the port city of Heraklion. Here, I experienced what might be the best tour of my entire life at the archaeological site of Knossos.

While you can visit on your own, I highly recommend booking a professional guide—especially if you’re fascinated by mythology. Knossos is the birthplace of Zeus and the foundation of countless stories involving the Greek gods. With a guide, the ruins come alive through myth, history, and little-known details that decode the past in the most captivating way.

This was, without question, the highlight of my entire trip.

Elounda: Quiet Beaches & Seafood Nights

As we drove east toward Elounda, the scenery shifted to stunning beaches and turquoise waters. This area is ideal for travelers seeking a quiet coastal escape with a slower pace than Athens or Heraklion.

Each evening, we enjoyed the freshest seafood along Elounda’s serene coastline. After busy days exploring, this peaceful interlude was exactly what we needed before our final stop.

Chania: Mountains, Farm-to-Table Meals & Shopping Heaven

After a scenic (and not-so-short) drive to Chania, we made a few stops along the way to sample Cretan pastries and get a behind-the-scenes look at olive oil production. Crete produces a huge portion of Greece’s olive oil, and seeing the process from start to finish gave me a whole new appreciation for it.

As we climbed the western mountains, the landscape opened up to breathtaking coastal views. Chania greeted us with Venetian-style architecture, ancient walls, and a picturesque harbor.

Chania is incredibly diverse—everyday brings something entirely new.

One day, we headed into the mountains to learn how to cook like a local Cretan. Welcomed into a traditional family home surrounded by farmland, we cooked alongside a mother who had perfected her craft through decades of experience (and very precise “by eye” measurements). The meal we created was easily one of the freshest and most memorable I’ve ever tasted!

Another day, we wandered the charming city center—truly a European maze of winding streets, boutique shops, and tapas-style Greek restaurants. Earlier in the trip we’d been advised, “Get lost. It’s the only way to truly experience Chania.” They were absolutely right!

Be sure to leave room in your suitcase—Chania’s leather goods are unmatched. Olive oil, raki, handmade crafts… it’s a souvenir heaven.

And beyond the city, Chania also offers stunning beaches and unforgettable hikes, each with scenery that feels almost unreal. This destination left me wanting more.

Closing Thoughts

After visiting Crete, speaking with our vendors, and hearing stories from locals, I realized I only experienced a small fraction of what this phenomenal island offers. Crete is an underrated destination I wish more people knew about—because they are truly missing out.

This is an island where you’re not limited to one vacation “style.” Adventure, history, beaches, luxury resorts, food experiences, cultural immersion—Crete has it all.

I just got back from Portugal, and I’m already dreaming of going back! Porto – Streets, Wine & Hidden Gems

We started our journey in Porto, and within hours, we were in love! The city’s old-world charm hits you the moment you wander its cobblestone streets—lined with colorful tiled buildings, locals chatting outside cafés, and the faint sound of church bells echoing over the Douro River. Porto feels timeless yet alive, with an energy that’s both laid-back and full of heart.

And the food? Absolutely incredible. Porto isn’t just about port wine (though trust me, it’s worth every sip). The local dishes are rich and comforting, the kind that make you want to linger over every bite. We joined a food tour where we sampled traditional Porto favorites and, of course, indulged in the city’s famous Francesinha sandwich—so good, we had it twice! Pair that with fresh seafood and cozy family-run taverns tucked into narrow lanes, and you’ll quickly understand why food is such a huge part of the city’s soul.

Everywhere we turned, Porto surprised us—vivid street art splashed across alleyways, quirky galleries hidden behind unassuming doors, and locals eager to share stories about their city.

Algarve Coast – Sun, Sea & Coastal Wonders

Then we flew down to Faro, picked up our rental car, and hit the road along the Algarve coast. After the buzz of the city, it felt like a deep breath — open skies, rugged cliffs, and the endless turquoise Atlantic ahead.

We spent our days soaking up the sun, walking the scenic boardwalks, and dipping our toes into the ocean. One of the absolute highlights? A boat tour of the caves along the coastline. Seeing the cliffs and hidden grottoes from the water was pure magic—the sunlight bouncing off the rock formations, the sea spray on our faces, and that feeling of being somewhere truly special.

The Algarve is also a paradise for seafood lovers. Every meal was fresh, simple, and impossibly good—grilled sardines, tender shellfish, and crisp white wine to wash it all down. There’s something about dining outdoors with the sound of the waves nearby that makes food taste even better.

From the coast, we drove through the Portuguese countryside to Lisbon, our final stop. The city instantly felt alive — the yellow trams clattering up steep hills, locals chatting outside cafés, and the sound of fado spilling out of tiny taverns. Lisbon is effortlessly cool yet deeply rooted in its history; every hill reveals a new perspective, both literally and figuratively.

We spent our days wandering through the city’s neighborhoods, getting lost on purpose, and tasting way too many pastries (no regrets). Pastel de Nata quickly became our daily ritual—flaky, golden perfection filled with creamy custard.

• Visit Praça do Comércio: Lisbon’s grand riverside square where locals and travelers gather to soak up the sunshine and sea breeze.
